5 Things Christians Should Be Doing

Jun 25, 2012   //   by Joshua Bedford   //   Blog, Everyday Life, Music, Walking With God  //  No Comments

In the last post, we looked at our unity. We are the body of Christ, and should be acting as if we are. In this post, we will look with greater detail at what this means. For those of you who have not read Friday’s post, simply click here. In that post, we discussed how we are the body of Christ, and looked at the song We Are The Body by Casting Crowns.

In this song, five questions are asked, and these are 5 things Christians should be doing:

  1. Why aren’t His arms reaching?
  2. Why aren’t His hands healing?
  3. Why aren’t His words teaching?
  4. Why aren’t His feet going?
  5. Why is His love not showing?

1) Why aren’t His arms reaching?

Jesus was constantly reaching out to people. Whether they were injured, covered in sin, or self-righteous, He always reached out to help them. What I see, and I am guilty of this myself, are Christians who try to avoid those who may smell bad, or have a bad reputation. These are people who need the love of Christ, and need to be reached out to.

2) Why aren’t His hands healing?

This is a very bold question to ask. Why aren’t we performing miracles, and healing people as Jesus and His disciples did? Why do we not see Christians performing miracles? Some think that miracles no longer exist, but I have witnessed accounts of miraculous healing, and they are very real. We can and will perform a miraculous healing, but not if we continue as we are now. If you examine the ones who perform miracles, you will see they are walking extremely close to God, and do not seek to gratify the flesh. The reason this is a bold question, is because it is a difficult answer to accept. Are you ready?

We are lacking in faith. Yes, unfortunately, this is true. Just because you have not performed a miracle does not mean you have no faith. I know many people who are extremely close to the Lord, and have not been used in this way. No, what I am saying is that our world as a whole lacks in faith. Miracles are not common, because miracles are viewed by most as a thing of the past. Why aren’t His hands healing? Seek to grow daily with God, and as it is within His Will, you will be used mightily.

3) Why aren’t His words teaching?

Jesus was constantly teaching. Why are we not doing the same? Most would rather talk about a recent basketball or football game than their Savior. Let’s change this. Seek to change your daily talk to Jesus. If we are deeply in love with something, then we cannot seem to stop talking about it. Why isn’t this the same with our love of Christ?

4) Why aren’t His feet going?

When Jesus was on earth in His human body, He frequently traveled to spread His teachings. My questions may seem repetitive, but why are we not doing this? Everywhere Jesus went, He taught about God and lived for Him. We go to church and worship, then the next morning we get to school or work and act no different than anyone else. Live what you teach, and teach what you believe. What do you do when you go to work or school, at the grocery store, or even just going to the gym? Are you spreading the love and story of Christ everywhere you go? Make this your daily goal.

5) Why is His love not showing?

Jesus never showed hate toward any person. He did not turn someone away because they were different than what is considered good. Just as we discussed when we spoke about Jesus reaching out to others, we should not turn someone away because they are poor and can’t afford good clothing or a shower, because they are mean, because they act differently than what is considered cool. The people we shun are people who need His love. When someone is shunned, show them love. This will speak mightily about who you are and, more importantly, Who you serve.

Matthew 25:40
New International Version (NIV)

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

What have you learned about being the body of Christ?

If We Are The Body

Jun 22, 2012   //   by Joshua Bedford   //   Blog, Music, Walking With God  //  13 Comments

Today we will look at the song If We Are The Body by Casting Crowns. This song is now one of my favorites, because of the message it brings. It is amazing how a good songwriter (like the one who wrote this song) can fit so much information into a few verses.

In this song, we hear the word “body” fairly often. The phrase “if we are the body…” is also repeated throughout the song. What is the body?

In this song, the term “body” refers to us. We are the body of Christ. As a Christian, you are a part of the body of Christ.

If we are the body
Why aren’t His arms reaching?
Why aren’t His hands healing?
Why aren’t His words teaching?

We make up the body of Christ. Jesus was given power over all things, and that is the same power we are able to use as Christians. While on earth, Jesus did many wonderful things. He reached out to those in need, healed the sick and wounded, and taught those who needed teaching. As the body of Christ, we are also called to do those things, and given the power through Christ to succeed. Reach out in love. Aid those who need to be healed. Teach those who need to be taught.

Make this your goal for the weekend. Reach out to those who need love. Help those who need help. Teach those who need to be taught. Monday, we will look into each subject more deeply, so please come back and spread the word. Every Christian needs to hear these things. Not because I am saying them, but because Jesus lived them.

What are some ways you have found to implement these things into your daily routine?

Someone Worth Dying For

Jun 15, 2012   //   by Joshua Bedford   //   Blog, Music, Walking With God  //  3 Comments

This is the song “Someone Worth Dying For” performed by MIKESCHAIR.

For this post I selected a song titled Something Worth Dying For. This is an extremely encouraging song. Why is it encouraging? This song by MIKESCHAIR shows that God considered us worth dying for. Many people have a hard time believing that God loves them enough to die for them, and this is addressed in this portion of the song:

Am I more than flesh and bone?
Am I really something beautiful?
Yeah, I want to believe, I want to believe that
I’m not just some wandering soul
That you don’t see and you don’t know
Yeah, I want to believe, Jesus help me believe
That I am someone worth dying for

That question is asked by many people. We are told in the Bible that we are not just here, but here for a purpose. We are not just humans, we are humans loved by God, and that love is so great that He would leave Heaven just to die for us. In this song, just before the part we just looked at where they ask if they are really worth it to Him, it says:

I know you’ve heard the truth that God has set you free
But you think you’re the one that grace could never reach
So you just keep asking, Oh, what everybody’s asking

You have heard the truth, and that truth is that God has set you free. He has died for you, so you won’t have to endure Hell. Many people, possibly you, think that they are too sinful to be forgiven, or that God doesn’t love them enough. You have heard the truth, but you don’t think it could be true for you. Because of this, you may ask the questions in the chorus. Am I really something beautiful? Am I more than just flesh and bone, more special than I currently believe? The answer is yes, and many people want to believe they are special to God, but something inside them says no.

This part of you saying no, you are not special to God, is your flesh. It knows that if you realize you’re more than just a sinner, that you are saved from sin, then you will no longer dwell in it. You are more than a sinner. You are someone special. You are someone worth dying for.

Do you struggle with thinking you are worth dying for? Have you been able to overcome that small part inside you that says you are not special? Please share in the comments below.

Spirit Fall

Jun 1, 2012   //   by Joshua Bedford   //   Blog, Music  //  No Comments

This is the song Spirit Fall, and is sung by the artist Chris Tomlin.

Spirit fall
Spirit fall
Holy Spirit fall
Fall on me

In this song, Chris Tomlin asks for the Holy Spirit to fall on him. He wants the Holy Spirit alive in him. Let’s look at the Holy Spirit for a minute, so we know what Chris Tomlin want.

In Acts 1:8, Luke tells us that we receive power when the Holy Spirit comes into us. Jesus told the disciples that He would send a Helper in John 14:15-17, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,  even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” The Holy Spirit is referred to here as the Helper. We have been given One Who will help us in things we cannot do. In Mark 16:17-18, we are told of the miracles we can perform with the power of the Holy Spirit. With the help of the Holy Spirit, the disciples cast out demons, spoke in tongues, healed the sick, and many other miraculous things.

These things are not the only things we can learn about the Holy Spirit, but we can get a picture of what Chris Tomlin wants. He wants to be able to proclaim the name of Christ and do anything he needs to to be able to do so. I personally want this also. To be able to perform miracles for Christ is amazing. This does not always mean healing people or casting out demons. Some other things we may do for Christ include being able to speak or sing well. We may be athletic and be able to reach out to others through that. You have an amazing gift that you are meant to use, so find out what that is, and start using it to glorify God. Now let’s continue with the song.

Like a mighty wind
Light the fire again
Come and breathe Your breath on me

I am sure you have experienced this, and I know for a fact I have. When someone is first saved, they are on fire for God. They cannot get enough of the Word, and want to tell everybody about it. The same thing occurs after a youth trip, adult retreat, or mission trip. You go on one of these things and you are extremely excited about  sharing the story of Christ.

Then life happens. We go back to work, school, or back to take care of the kids (which is also hard work) for moms. We slowly sink back to the daily routine which does not include spreading the story of Christ, reading your Bible, or otherwise being on fire for God.

Chris Tomlin sings this asking God to light the fire again. I completely understand this, and many people have trouble with this. Make it your prayer for God to breathe His breath on you. To sweep in like a mighty wind and light the fire again. This may be a prayer that you need to pray frequently. I know for a fact I pray daily for God to bring me closer to Him.

There Will Be A Day

May 18, 2012   //   by Joshua Bedford   //   Blog, Music  //  2 Comments

This song is titled “There Will Be A Day” and is sung by Jeremy Camp.

I try to hold on to this world with everything I have
But I feel the weight of what it brings, and the hurt that trys to grab
The many trials that seem to never end, His word declares this truth,
that we will enter in this rest with wonders anew
But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering

There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we’ll hold on to you always

Jeremy Camp starts his song saying he tries to hold on to this world with everything he has, but the weight is too great. He declares that he holds onto the hope that Christ offers. This hope is in heaven, where there will be no suffering, pain, or fears. But until the day comes when Jesus comes back and takes us Christians to heaven with Him, we are to hold onto Him and follow His teachings.

I know the journey seems so long
You feel your walking on your own
But there has never been a step
Where you’ve walked out all alone

There are many people who think they are alone in the world, and that the whole world is against them. Life seems as if it will never end, always being tortured. He addresses this and shares truth. You are never alone. Jesus is walking by your side at every moment, and He will not let you encounter anything you cannot handle. Since “I can do all things through Him Who gives me strength,” there is nothing we cannot do if we have a great enough faith in Jesus.

Troubled soul don’t lose your heart
Cause joy and peace he brings
And the beauty that’s in store
Outweighs the hurt of life’s sting

Jeremy follows his verse about us not being alone with telling us not to lose heart. Yes, we are hurt in life, but what Jesus offers is so much greater that it “Outweighs the hurt of life’s sting.” So take joy in the fact that we have access to that joy and peace.

I can’t wait until that day where the very one I’ve lived for always will wipe away the sorrow that I’ve faced
To touch the scars that rescued me from a life of shame and misery this is why this is why I sing….

There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face

There will be a day, He’ll wipe away the stains, He’ll wipe away the tears, He’ll wipe away the tears…..there will be a day.

In the last three verses he speaks of the long-awaited day when Jesus returns. When He returns, He will wipe away all of our tears and pain, and there will be no further suffering. He says he cannot wait until that day, and I also long for it to come.

So take courage in the fact that there is a day coming (we know not when) where every tear will be wiped away. Live life for Christ, because He is right there with you to help you.
